COMPOSITION

Composition is one of the most difficult aspects of understanding musical language. It consists of creating oneself a communication with someone only through sounds . Obviously the composition is nourished by all of the above: analyzing different pieces and music, understanding the musical language, understanding how the musical parts within a composition work and are related (melody, harmony, speech, form, etc.). In songwriting we need to listen more than ever. A listening that, as it develops, renews the very meaning of the word listen, since one perceives and understands that there are many different levels of listening that refer from listening to a simple note to understanding an entire discourse within one piece.

As in any discipline, the most important thing, in addition to training and studying the musical parts, is to practice it. The experience is achieved by doing , and in the composition (as in any type of creation) we find a blank sheet every time we start and to fill it we face a multitude of different problems. It is one who must look for what he wants to say and try it many times until he is able to say it in the best possible way.

Our approach to teaching composition is not one of a watertight subject  in which concrete answers are always given. We teach to know the deficiencies of our musical communication in each composition that is worked, but we do not give definitive solutions to the problems. In the field of creation, everything is always very elusive. That is why it is very important to establish solid bases of harmony, musical language, analysis, understanding of form and discourse, in order to develop a criterion that will allow us to discern between the different paths that will appear and choose from. the best possible way to be faithful to what we want to communicate.
